It’s the New Year, which means things are a little slow on the news front, but here are three new trailers to chew on. Some delinquent superheroes, sexy assassins and bearded badasses.
CHRONICLE
I really have no idea what to make of Chronicle. I like the idea of a found footage superhero movie, even if some scenes clearly show how impractical the format can be when things get a little crazier (perhaps it breaks format in the later stages, ala Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon?) and marketing this movie during ad breaks for Misfits, e4′s teen superhero drama, was an inspired move.
It’s fun to see what regular, dipshit kids would do with incredible superpowers and how quickly that could get out of hand, and I will watch anything that stars Michael B. Jordan after starring in The Wire and Friday Night Lights, two television masterpieces. My only real problem with this trailer is being forced to listen to that goddamn Jessie J song.
HAYWIRE
Gina Carano is one of those rare women who can combine feminine beauty with formidable body mass. She could crush me, like a wicker basket in a rockfall, and I probably wouldn’t mind all that much. But that’s between me and my therapist.
Steven Soderbergh is a director who always takes risks, he’s never content to settle into a niche and with Haywire we get to see him make a fully fledged action movie. Whether Haywire fails or succeeds is incidental, the real thrill is seeing a great talent like Soderbergh fearlessly cross genre boundaries, and with a talent roster to back him up.
BAD ASS
Clearly inspired by the “Epic Beard Man” viral video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BmPMFnDOjFg&feature=endscreen&NR=1) that spawned numerous memes, Bad Ass tells the story of a bearded Vietnam veteran who takes matters into his own hands (or, more accurately, fists) when confronted by danger.
Danny Trejo plays the titular Bad Ass and this takes this simple idea and takes it to its most extreme and violent conclusion. It looks like an absolute blast.
