So, despite the fact the original fared so well on the back of an online campaign, it seems the main marketing weight behind Paranormal Activity 2 has arrived pretty much in the month the film is released in cinemas.
Unusually for a movie so eagerly anticipated (if the quote used in the latest clip is to be believed at least), Paramount has only just got around to putting out a batch of virals – just a few weeks before audiences will get to see the whole thing. The reasons for this could be many, but frankly, I reckon they need to be commended for at least having some form of self-censorship on the matter.
Let me make my thoughts on Paranormal Activity 2 clear. First of all, I will say I’m looking forward to it. I loved the original and am just about ready for a second helping of good, old fashioned insomnia. But, I would also add it isn’t a film I can get too excited about. First of all, I don’t reckon it can possibly have the same impact of its lo-fi predecessor – as Hollywood typically tries to do ’more’ with its sequels. The fact this one has an estimated budget of $2.75m is – while still modest by modern standards - indicative they want to ‘amp up the scary’ when compared to the $11,000 the first one allegedly cost.
The reason Paranormal Activity succeeded was in its ability to not do very much, build up tension and give you a big, simple scare. This means that if a trailer is going to exist, it’ll have to show you all the best bits – the cardinal sin of modern movie marketing and one the original PA was absolutely guilty of.
However, with just a few weeks until the sequel gets its international release, Paramount have wisely kept their head down, probably realising that this was never going to be as ‘trailerable’ a franchise as the latest Michael Bay toy-themed explode-a-thon.
Do I think the new trailer and their accompanying virals still spoil? Yes. But I think ALL trailers spoil movies. What do you think? Is the trailer below paranormal overkill? Or just enough to get you into your local cinema come the end of October? let us know!
Update: The French Paranormal Activity 2 website has also now gone live (In case you wanna know what doors sound like when slamming in a different language.)
