The summer of comic book movies is fast approaching and we want to get the definitive list of the greatest comic book movies ever made in before it does. The summer movie season kicks off with Thor next week and we’ve got the #29-20 of the best comic book movies of all time to wet your appetite.
Read #41 – 30 to see what you missed.
29. Punisher War Zone – It took three times but they finally made a Punisher movie right. Combining the ultra-violence of the comics with the goofy nature of the medium, Punisher: War Zone was dumped into theatres and quickly forgotten. It’s as shame since someone finally figured it out.
28. Daredevil – Much has been said about Daredevil, most of it negative. True the original theatrical cut leaves much to be desired, but the director’s cut fixes much of what doesn’t work and proves the value of good editing.
27. Red – Bruce Willis admits he’s getting old and enlists the help of Helen Mirren, John Malkovich and Morgan Freeman to stop government baddies. Watching Helen Mirren use large weapons is worth it alone.
26. Road to Perdition – Comic book movies aren’t always about superheroes and people shooting high caliber weapons. Sometimes they are period pieces. Road to Perdition is a solid gangster epic.
25. Spider-Man – Director Sam Raimi brings his unique style to the comic book world. He’s the perfect director to bring webhead to life. It will be interesting to see how rebooting the franchise works after the successful original films.
24. 300 – The original comic book is little more than epic battles and director Zach Snyder gives the viewer a visual feast. It’s dirty, violent and incredible to watch.
23. Superman 2 – The last good Superman film, this sets a darker tone than the first first Superman movie. It treats the subject with seriousness and doesn’t pander to audience like the later films do.
22. V for Vendetta – Alan Moore’s works is some of the best in comics. His adaptations usually don’t fair so well (I’m looking at you LXG). V for Vendetta is one of his best adaptations. With an amazing cast and top notch production design, V excels.
21. Spider-Man 2 – Easily the best of the Spider-Man films, Spider-Man 2 gets everything just right before falling apart due to studio interference in Spider-Man 3. Alfred Molina makes the film with his great performance as Doc Ock.
20. X-Men – This is one film comic book fans never thought they would see. Standalone comic book films are hard enough, but a superhero team seemed impossible. Director Bryan Singer does the seemingly impossible by bringing the story to life on a shoestring budget.
