Martin Campbell plans to make Green Lantern more ‘Realistic’

Well, well, well… It seems that Martin Campbell the man who saved the bond franchise twice with Goldeneye and Casino Royale has a cool little tool to try and help him make the best Green Lantern movie that he can.  When speaking Sci-Fi Wire Campbell stated that they have created a ‘cheese meter’ which they are using in pre-production meetings to try and keep the film as ‘real’ as possible.

Campbell states:

“I think the thing to do is keep a sense of reality about it. Any time we talk about it, we sit in meetings, we have a cheese meter. We talk about de-cheesing any scene. So it’s quite funny. We’ve all sort of got a sort of cheese meter where that becomes our sort of yardstick in terms of keeping it, giving it some sense of reality.”

“So often in these superhero movies, nobody seems to get hurt. I remember seeing Wolverine, and he picks people up and hurls them 100 yards into a brick wall. These people, apparently unhurt, sort of get up and continue to fight just as strongly as they did before. Well, there’s something absurd about that, in my opinion.”

Gladly it seems that Martin Campbell isn’t get too caught up in the freedom that the comic book world gives you and is keeping his idea’s rather grounded in reality, personally I think it’s fantastic.  Some Directors have seemed to give too much leeway to the argument that it’s a ‘superhero’ movie and anything can happen.  Green Lantern itself is a pretty ‘out there’ character and story to begin with, so having a firm head on his shoulders and giving himself creative limitations when it comes to cheesiness is a great attribute to have.  I for one am now really looking forward to this movie which is set for a summer 2011 release and yes this is partly due to my man crush on Ryan Reynolds but so what?  Don’t judge.

Hopefully he can make a film that can live up to the same calibre as its DC compatriot The Dark Knight. One thing’s for sure I think Martin Campbell would be up for the challenge.
