Swings and Roundabouts. On the one hand, this isn’t the worst possible outcome judging by the longlist released last week. Then again the glaring omissions of the long list mean that certain things still weren’t going to show up here. So that’s ZERO nominations for The Tree of Life, one of the defining films of 2011. That’s right, not even cinematography or visual effects. It may be flogging a dead (war) horse but it bears repeating that the British Academy when putting together it’s longlist deemed Midnight in Paris to have superior visual effects.
As we have it, a few (but by no means all) reasonable assumptions based on declarative statements made by BAFTA:
- My Week With Marilyn is a better British Film than Tyrannosaur and Weekend.
- The Help is a better film than Moneyball & The Tree of Life
- Life in a Day isn’t one of the best documentaries of the year after all
- The Iron Lady had one of the five best original screenplays of the year
- Olivia Colman unfortunately didn’t give a truly incredible and heartwrenching performance in Tyrannosaur, while Viola Davis’ strong supporting turn is in no way considered category fraud by anyone.
- Drive may be one of the best films of the year, but only Carey Mulligan was any good in it.
- Judi Dench farted, BAFTA acted accordingly.
- When there’s no dialogue to get in the way of your score, you might as well turn up to the ceremony naked to collect your award.
- Cinematography obviously means something different to BAFTA than anyone else… in the world.
- The make-up category is all kinds of wrong, but there’ll be more to come on that later.
- When you’ve awarded a Special Achievement BAFTA to David Heyman for making 7 Films in 9 Years, earning nearly $5,000,000,000… one of, if not the greatest achievement in British Cinema it’s pretty embarrassing when you realise you forgot they were making an 8th.
- A day’s worth of Sound Mixing & Design will get you a BAFTA nomination for Best Sound.
- When you fell asleep 5 minutes into The Tree of Life then there’s no point voting for Best Visual Effects.
- Short Films Exist.
- And when you let the public vote for things, be prepared for Chris O’Dowd to win an award.
If Tinker Tailor wins Best Film and doesn’t win Best British Film then that’s the kind of hypocrisy we must come to expect.
In summary… Artist leads with 12 Noms, Tinker Tailor not far behind with 11, Hugo with 9, Marilyn with 6, War Horse and The Help with 5, Drive and The Iron Lady with 4.
